Switzerland

Here are the highlights from our first day in Switzerland. I will elaborate on these later. My previous post has been updated and is almost finished. Sorry, no pictures today.

Switzerland
  • We serrendipitously had a European breakfast in the dining car on our train from Thun to Interlaken. This is a region of Switzerland with stunning lakes and mountains. We enjoyed sitting amongst older couples and groups in the warm dining car, watching morning bloom over the water. At one point during breakfast, with croissant in hand and gazing out onto the water, Jenny said to me, "It looks like Idaho." After qualifying her statement with various descriptions of mountainous regions in Idaho, we both agreed that we live in a very choice part of the country, and that it will be hard to leave this fall.
  • Hotel room with a view
  • Train to Kleine Sheidegg, hike down along the base of the Jungfrau through Biglenalp and Mettlenalp (8 miles) . Most spectacular scenery we've seen. Jenny reassured me that she'd never seen anything like this in Idaho.
  • Rosti lunch - hashbrowns with chive garlic butter and a fried egg, wurst, potato soup
  • Sudoku master Jenny. After discovering different strategies and patterns, Jenny has cut the amount of time it takes her to do a Sudoku in half. While climbing we thought about sitting down and doing a sudoku
  • Dinner at the hotel
  • Jungfraujoch tomorrow (if I can wake up)

Jonny: Your posts are so teasing--a list of fascinating sights and experiences that gets expanded and eventually gets adorned with pictures. I look up your blog again and again, to see what delicious detail has been added. Thank you for the abundance--I feel like I've taken the trip, too (without all the parent/child tension that would entail). Love you, Mom

J2 - Vielen Dank for all the great posts. It has been great to visit europe vicariously through you. Please make sure you stop at grab a "Doener Kabob" (similar to a gyro but so much better) at a local street vendor. They are so very good. Also, when you are down in Italy (assuming you are going to Florence) please eat some gelato for me (the very best in the world!). I hope you also make it to Sienna which is one of my favorite places in Italy. Have fun and stay safe. Auf widersehen.

Amazing pics! I'm jealous of the great time you guys are having in Switzerland - you'll know that part of Europe pretty well after this trip. I'd love to go back there next time I'm over there. Your posts are great; I'm looking forward to more.

PS: I just got a new camera, so my old one is yours when you get back, if you want it.
